The thought form “I am the chosen one” keeps coming up these days. Calling someone “the chosen one” is usually reserved for avatars, messiahs, ascended masters, or cult leaders - but certainly not for regular ‘ole Joes like David Summerfield, or you the reader. People can ascend to power through the democratically elected process, or attain power through force. As in the case of a cult, power can be bestowed on individuals by an adoring public. Once “in power”, the individual has to deal with how to live with the feeling of power - which can quickly get out-of-hand. Some people suddenly find themselves in power, and an inevitable conclusion could be that it must be their destiny. This all seems presumptuous to me. So let’s spend some time understanding how this phrase is used in today’s world - and what to do about it.
Harry Potter, careful how you act out being the chosen one. “www.imgflip.com” (Harry Potter insists he is the chosen one, which makes Hermione smack him in the head.)
If someone claims to be “chosen” - it’s often assumed God (or the will of the people) did the choosing. And if that is true, then how could anyone go against God’s chosen one? That would be advising God, or telling God He made the wrong choice. And if the concept of God is not voiced, it’s likely to be a “god-like” being! I made a quick review of several of our current political leaders (not limited to the USA), and was surprised to find several of these prominent figures have voiced such amazing professions of “I am on a spiritual mission”, and thus I am chosen to do what I’m doing. Shouldn’t one bow down and worship such an individual?
“I am the chosen one”...of course you are! Wink wink (www.quickmeme.com)
I had no idea this article would go this way. If I felt I was on a mission, this would help my feeling of urgency and help me corral all my forces to “get the job done”, whatever my job was. (And, by the way, this is exactly what happens to those in power, when they feel they’ve been divinely chosen to lead whoever wants to follow them.) Careful now….if I really am a chosen one, it would only be by my own choosing. Does that sound any better? By the end of this article I intend to convince you that you are also a chosen one…and you did the choosing yourself. Perhaps this article is meant to counter today’s trend to look to a chosen person (not you) to do the saving. “Save” sounds a bit religious, so I could just as easily say “someone to do the thinking and doing for you….since they can do it better..” Some political leaders (those who need to be adored and put on a pedestal) encourage their followers to idolize them. I hope none of you readers are among those people. So why even talk about this? Basically, I’m aiming to help you not have to look to others to lead you in any way, or do the thinking for you, or solve your problems. I see a danger in that. Everyone must know how to think for themselves. It’s great to have teachers, but a good teacher should want all their students to accept their own responsibility in leading their own lives.
I’m going out on a limb… (www.emilysquotes.com”. Quote attributed to many people - Will Rogers, Mark Twain, Jimmy Carter, Jackson Brown, Frank Scully, etc).
I might as well go all the way out on this limb I’m on. How’s this: if you’re reading this article, it should be obvious that you chose to be here at this time in history - and I understand that might be a stretch for some of you. Can you accept this? Any interest you might have about why you’re here - well, it can only be because you specifically chose to be here, right now. Again, bear with me. If you can accept you did the choosing, then no one else is responsible for you being here. In your own world, you are it. That’s how one of my teachers ended most of his workshops, and for a while, it mystified me. “What do you mean, ‘I am it’?” What does “it” mean? Am I really a chosen one? Well, don’t look to others to inspire you, don’t look to others to tell you what to do, don’t look to others to be “the chosen one” for you. Can you see where this is all going? You are it!
Paul Muad’Dib Atriedes facing the challenges of showing and proving he’s the chosen one. (www.wikipedia.org.)
I just realized the notion of being the chosen one keeps emerging in our movies. It has become a model we can’t ignore. The Dune movie (with Dune Two in theaters now) is all about Paul Atreides (later called Muad’Dib) who is fulfilling his role as the Messiah (chosen one) to rise up and defeat House Harkonnen, to start with. The 2nd Dune book written by Frank Herbert is called Dune Messiah. The Fremen (the original inhabitants of Arrakis before spice was discovered) knew they couldn’t gain control of their planet without extraordinary help (finding their chosen one). They also knew the prophecies were clear - a “savior” would emerge and save their cause and planet. So everyone was searching for their savior/leader. It could be said that the Fremen actually created, by their intense need and desire, who they were looking for. Back to those “‘ole Joes'' like the rest of us. Is it possible the times we’re living in are doing the same as the Fremen experienced? (…and now I’m not talking about fictional characters) Do we create the very chosen ones we need? This takes me back to my original intent - we all are answering the call to help our present world. One could say that the present needs are so great, it does require all of us to fill our roles as countless chosen ones - it needs us all - doing our best to share our inspiration, our role modeling, our clear thinking, our quietness in following our inner vision, and just “being ourselves”. So just figure out what skill you came here with, and fulfill your role as your own chosen one. And by the way, just by being present - each of us cannot help but send out our personal vibrations and frequencies which do have an effect. In other words, you can’t help but play your “chosen” role right now…no matter what else you’re doing.
Oh, is this how it works? (www.istockphoto.com).
You mean…me?? Well, okay. Guess I better get my act together and get to work :-)
